Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is meant by an International University in Thailand?

In the case of Asian University, an International University is defined as (1) using the international language of English, (2) having small sized, learner-centered classes, and (3) strong links with and recognition by prestigious overseas universities. Asian University uses English as a medium for instruction, in administration, and in many of its social, sports and other extra-curricular activities. Its average class size is 15 students, though the teacher-student ratio is less than that, and its teaching methodology is highly participatory. It is important to be aware of the enormous cultural and academic differences between an International University such as Asian University and state Universities offering ‘International programs'.

Q: Are all the courses residential?

For most full time courses, the answer is yes. The students who attend the University come from all over the world and of course all parts of Thailand and therefore, they need to stay at the university. The dormitories are of exceptionally high standard and are fully air-conditioned with showers and a local area network offering 24-hour Internet access. TV’s with UBC and daily newspapers are strategically situated in common rooms throughout the campus, there are 3 separate restaurants offering a range of Thai and International cuisine. The University also has a mini-mart that opens every evening for all essential toiletries, drinks and snacks.

Q: What about part time courses?

The University has been running part time MBA and MSM courses for several years and all units are tailored to suit the individual Manager’s needs. A modular MEd program is also available to enable even the busiest Educator to undertake such a commitment. Several English Language Programs take place throughout the year to improve students’ command of the English language or bring them up to the required level to undertake university level study, in English. More details of the courses are available by contacting our admissions staff.

Q: Many friends have told me about the high quality of teaching and the unique student to teacher ratio, can you explain?

Most academics agree that the smaller the class-size the better understanding the student will have. At Asian University the student teacher ratio is 5:1. The emphasis is on ‘students learning’ rather than ‘lecturers teaching’. Most students seem to like this approach and are expected to join in with frequent classroom debates.

Q: Can I visit the University to see all the facilities?

We are very proud of the University campus and, you would be more than welcome to visit the campus. Please contact the admissions department to arrange an appointment, or drop in during working hours.

Q:. How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on what course is undertaken and more importantly whether it’s full or part time. As a rule of thumb, for example, the Asian University MBA is about one fifth of the cost of the equivalent MBA in the UK. This does not take into account the very high living costs of study abroad and the long absences from family and loved ones. More details can be found in the ‘tuition and fees’ section of this web-site, but again it would be advisable to contact our admissions office for prices, scholarships and a full list of courses available.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about the Asian University English Summer Camps?

Asian University English Summer Camps aim to provide periods of intensive academic study for upper secondary students in a challenging yet enjoyable learning environment. By living on campus, students are introduced to the realities of University life and the concepts of higher level academic studies.
University students who are studying as undergraduates in Thai Universities will also benefit from these programs. The program is academic in nature. On a typical weekday, there are 6 class hours followed by self-study, sports periods and evening activities. There is the opportunity to obtain an insight into IELTS examinations along with some University-style lectures and tutorials. Weekend activities include excursions to places of interest, team building activities and regular movies and themed barbecues. There are two English summer camps per year, both lasting for four weeks. The first one runs from mid March to mid April, and the second from mid April through to mid May.

Q: Does the University cater for disabled students?

Yes

Q: What IELTS/TOEFL score do I need to be accepted on a degree course at the University?

To undertake a first degree you need an IELTS score of at least 5.5 and for a post graduate degree you will be accepted with a score of 6.0 or above. In both cases, higher scores would better ensure future success. Many students who have not achieved this level of English but who still want an Internationally recognized qualification have either joined the English Immersion Programme (EIP) or the Intensive Academic preparation Programme (IAP) or alternatively have opted for 12 months of the very popular foundation programmes .

Q: When is the best time to apply for a place at the University?

Asian University was established with support from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, which is widely regarded as one of the best Engineering Schools in Europe. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology has taken full advantage of this connection by designing its teaching programs in the same style, with similar content, as the equivalent programs at Imperial College.
Our graduates are expected not only to be highly technically competent, but also to be mature, self-reliant and capable of moving confidently into new and diverse fields, either within Engineering or elsewhere.

Q: Okay, so what are the advantages of studying at Asian University?

International standard - We provide a high standard of education, similar to equivalent programs at universities overseas in English speaking countries.
International language - English is used as a medium for instruction.
Effective teaching system - The teaching system involves considerable interaction between staff and students, with regular tutorials and small classes. Students are also free to visit lecturers in their offices, outside regular classes.
Qualified teaching staff - A majority of our lecturers have doctoral degrees (PhD) or professional qualifications in their own respective fields. Many of them also have industry experience as well as teaching or research experience at recognized institutions in Thailand and overseas.

Q: What are the job prospects like when I graduate with a degree from Asian University?

Our graduates are highly regarded and are sought after by public and private sectors. Employers of one graduate often ask if there are any more graduates available who they could consider for employment! Many graduates are working for international companies in Thailand and overseas. Some graduates have received scholarships for their postgraduate studies in Europe, Japan, Korea and the United States.

Q: Is there any internship programme during semester break?

We encourage our students to work during their semester break. The main objective of the internship programme is to give each student an opportunity to apply his or her knowledge and experience acquired from classes to work on a challenging project in industry. Since Asian University is located close to both Eastern Seaboard and Maptaput industrial estates, there are plenty of places that can provide internships for our students.
